PUBLIC MEETING.
A Public Meeting, called by advertisement, was held in Dunedin on Thursday evening, the 25th instant. The object of the meeting was to consider a proposition for establishing a regular market, for the sale of farm produce, &c. Owing to the neglect of a gentleman who had promised to obtain the key of the School-house, the meeting adjourned to the Long Room of the Royal Hotel. The meeting was respectably attended. Mr. David Calder having been called to
the Chair, stated the object of the meeting. The meeting was unanimous on the desirableness of the object, but a lengthened discussion ensued upon details, during which some valuable suggestions were thrown out. It was ultimately resolved, That it was desirable to establish a Weekly Market, to be held every Friday between the hours of 11 and 2 o'clock, in that portion of the High Street of Dunedin by the side of the Mechanics' Institution ; and that the first market be held on the first Friday in December. It was further resolved, That it was desirable to establish Trysts or Fairs, to be held halfyearly ; and that a Committee be appointed to enquire as to the most suitable time and season to hold the same, and otherwise to arrange the carrying out of the project. The following gentlemen were appointed a Committee, with power to add to their number : ■ — Messrs. Calder, M'Gibbon, Loudon, Blackie, Smith, Familton, M'Kechnie, Oliver, and Howden.
Thanks having been voted to the Chair, the meeting separated.
