ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Otago Witness. Sir,— l am sorry to state that your paper mis- - represents any affair in which I am concerned (although I have never yet noticed tue ur"st=+.o-

ments) ; but in" this instance I feel it a duty I owe to myself, as a truth-loving person, to request that you will publish this my denial of ever having obtained one signature to the petition you refer to without either reading it through myself to the party, or allowing him to read it himself. In corroboration of this statement, 1 beg you to insert the accompanying letter, as well as this, in your next paper. — I am, &c, Robert "Williams. Dunedin, 29th March, 1852. Sift, — In reply to your note we desire to state, that we were both present when you obtained the signatures at the Tokomairiro. We declare that the petition was read over verbatim, and that every one had a chance of reading it before signing, and that you distinctly stated to each person not to sign it unless he fully agreed in every thing written in it. We remain, yours truly, William Henry Valpy, Junr. W. G. Filleul. To R. Williams, Esq., Dunedin.
