TO CORRESPONDENTS.

"A Lay Membee or the Fe.ee Church."— We must decline to publish, this gentleman's letter. A religious controversy in an ordinary newspaper is a subject which we consider quite out of place, and one we believe to have no beneficial tendency. Such a discussion requires greater space than can be afforded, and deeper study than is bestowed on a weekly journal of news ; and from aught that we have ever seen of such matters, never produces a change of sentiment on either side, but only imbitters and renders more intolerant the disputants. Our correspondent's argument that the Witness being the only newspaper published in Otago has some weight ; but we beg of him not to press that argument, as we feel convinced that the publication of the letter in question would be most injudicious.
