When housing conditions were being discussed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce, It was stated that fourteen Maoris were living in the rear of shop premises without, it was alleged, any sanitary provisions. Mr. T. N. Dickson, s city councillor, described the conditions in many houses and residential buildings in Wanganui as appalling, as many lacked proper conveniences. People had to live in them however, because they could not find alternate accommodation, and be thought the Chamber should study the position with a view to improving cond v tions. On Mr. Dickson’s motion, the executive decided to set up a Housing Committee to investigate conditions and make recommendations for obtaining a better standard of housing in the city.
