"PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 3"

PRIME MINISTER’S SILENCE RESENTED DUNEDIN, Dec. 21. Statements made by the Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union (Mr. W. W. Mulholland) regarding the recent broadcast by the Controller of Commercial Broadcasting, in which it was alleged that Mr. .Scrimgeour referred to the farmers as “Public Enemy No. 3” were wholeheartedly supported by the Otago provincial council of the union at its meeting to-day. The discussion on the subject was brief, but members were unanimous in their support of the following resolution: “That the council wholeheartedly supports the Dominion president’s statements and expresses disappointment that the Prime Minister has not seen fit to reply to them.” The president of the Otago branch (Mr. R. S. Thompson), who moved the motion, said he thought they would be unanimous in their decision to support Mr. Mulholland’s statement. Mr. D. 11. Cockburn said that the Prime Minister had, as far as he knew, fai’ed to reply to the president. That was more or less an insult to farmers and they should not hesitate to draw Mr. s>avage’s attention to it. “We do not like to see our president ignored,” Mr. Cockburn said, “and we should see that we obtain a reply.” Mr. W. Lee: You may make old Scrimgeour feel very important. The motion was carried unanimously.
