KEEPING THE CAR SMART
Each part of the car should bo kept clean end smart-looking. In this connection the silencer is ui'ton overlooked, and allowed to remain dusty and dirty, while the same applies to the exhaust pipe. To keep the exhaust pipe clean a few drops of oil can be applied to it when warm, and if will be found that the pipe will receive quite a polish after this li:\j> been carried out a lew times. If it is actually desired to paint the pipe and silencer, the following mixture, which makes aboat 2ill». of paint, can be used:—Boiled linseed oil, l-51b.; Japan varnish l-51b; spirits of turpentine, 2-J pint; lamp-black lioz pure powdered graphite, IJoz; powdered oxide of manganese Joz. To make mix the linseed oil with the Japan varnish, then add tlie lamp-black graphite and the manganese in tin.- order stated, stirring all the time. As the mixture thickens it should be thinned down with turpentine until the qqantity mentioned is added. 'Tile paint dries very quickly and requires constant stirring. It should lie applied to the silencer when the latter is hot and clean outside.
