LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Otaur tau Unemployment Committee ovas -hela '. on Tuesday, 27th September. Present were. Messrs J. H.. Smith (chairman), J. Fisher, J. ;G. C. Baker, W. Bl' Rowan and D. Ballam (secretary).

The local representative of the Agricultural Department wag present, and intimated that at a largely attended meeting of farmers at Gummi.es Bush, it was decided to proceed with the. Rabbit Exterminating Scheme and requested the allocation of from ten to twelve men from this district. It . was resolved that whilst m sympathy with the scheme, this cpminittee: could hot "supply^ the men"as every available nian. Was on. -essential productive work. , A letter ' from "the relief worker^, protesting < against the new conditions of the No. 5 scheme was received. The Local Unemployment committee expressed the opinion that the existing conditions were more acceptable and more, valuable than the prpposed alterations. The committee desires to draw the attention, of farmers to the ' 4B " (contract) scheme. The subsidy now available under this, scheme makes it of great 'benefit to' them. Various circulars were read and discussed, one m particular,, the blending/ of tiie No.: 5 and the old No. 2 Schem.es, being of particular interest to private citizens, wor k of certain classes being done on a, •50— 50 basis.
