OBITUARY.
MR JOSEPH PARMENTER Another old resident of this dis- . trict, m the person of Mr Joseph Pai 1 menter ypassed to his long rest at his residence, Beatrice Street, 'Invercar- , "gill, on Thursday, .10th December after a short and sudden illness.. Deceased appeared to # enjoy his usual health; ojn jMlonday,. when he visitei che bowling green for his usual game, .* but a sudden seizure on Tuesday necessitated an operation from which he failed to rally. Born at Woolwich, London, m 1851, he grew up there a)id. enjtered* the Army to learn his apprenticeship training 'as a saddler while under directions for service. Obtaining his discharge, he sailed for New Zealand m the S.S. "Wellington", arriving at Port Chalmers on 18th March, 1876. He worked m Welington at his trade for the following .6 years before. moving to Otautau to open up m busi ness fof himself m 1882. Tour years later he visited Melbourne and there married Miss Isabella Cameron. The 3 7oung couple continued m. residence m the Victorian capital for six years, ( until, with their first two/ chil'ren, they arrived m Otautau, deceased ] again .opening m business m a shop - near where Laing's top shop now j stands. Two years later, he moved t liis shop? to premises next O'Brien's -j Hotel and where later the "Standard" 3 was first issued. In 1889, he pur-.g chased a, section and built .business t and dwelling premises where the., :<Parmenter" buildings : stilly Stand, i In 1914; he sold out to Mr Wilson 1 in'd - lef t j for Melbourne. Eighteen c nonths later he returned and re- v mined his trade, to continue m this g iritil his retirement m 1922, from g vhich date he has lived a quiet life a h Invercargill, interesting himself m I lis garden and m bowling . , « ■ Of a'kindly, genial nature, he was w w|i liked &nd highly respected, fl Assessing a keen BenSe of his.public a nd private duties as a citizen' m ate intall progressive Tdwin. In 1916 he was elected a Com- M lissioner on the Town Board to w erve for 4yyears, being called upon tl 3 act as Chairman at, the Board meet . si agon Bth December, 1919. He was & /.trustee for years on the Methodist tl )hurch circuit and, m the early days, t] c was 1 a sergeant m the old Wallace P lounted Rifles. A thorough trades- pi lan at his job, he built up a business oJ ith a name well known for good R orkmanship, and m later years... ssisted his growin(g family] jto be- An >me established.
