GENERAL ELECTIONS.
; The general election on Wednesday "saw heavy polling and the return of the Coalition^ party with a strong working majority. Both the Prime Minister, Hon. Forbes f and the leader of the -Reform, Hon; Coates, were reelectecr with substantial majorities. In Wallace^ Hon. Adam Hamilton re- • tamed his seat .with ' more than a 2 to 1 majority and our Electorate is still honoured m having its membesr holding a. high position m the Cabinet as Postmaster General and Minister of Internal Affairs. Reform Coalition gained 4 seats and lost 2, one of ' which is Mid-Canterbury, where the Hon. D. Jones, Minister of Agricul- . ture lost his seat. Coalition United gained 2 seats and lost 4, while Labour gained 5 seats and lost one. In at least two* electorates, the difference is so little that the: official .; recount, with absentee votes included, /■: may still see a change, whereby Hon. Chas. Statham, the Spjiakhr of the '. fll ouse, would, lose to a Labour nomi- < ?nee and where Mr 'CHnkard y(C.U.) may -lose to a Labour nominee in ': Rot'orua electorate".
