After a search of many years a solicitor discovered Hem as one of three -soldiers who, under fire, dug- a wounded, major from the debris of a shelled dug-out and carried him to a first-aid station. A few years later the major died, bequeathing- £5000 to his rescuers. Hem is the first to be identified. In the three British army centres \yhere time-expirpd soldiers are taught some trade, about 3000 men are. trained ever}' year, the: vocations ranging from valeting and waiting at table to electric wiring, building, motor building and all forms of painting and decorating*. So successful was the World Jamboree o:f the Boy Scouts, held neai Liverpool last summer, . that there is • a 'smrpfus of some £10,000, t0 be handed to the association.
