PRESENTATION.

; At the Town Board meeting on : Thursday, Mr Robert Scatter was m attendance, and opportunity was taken ■ to make him a presentation of an attache case, walking stick and pipe from the members and wellwishers of the Town. In making the the chairman, Mr W. J? Wesney, said it was only right that the thanks and appreciation of members and ratepayers should be extended to their guest for the many years' services given as a Commissioner. Mjr Scatter had sat with nearly ail the present members and many who are .not now resident and had also acted as chairman for a term, filling that capacity when Lord Jellicoe visited the Township. He had been a member for practically 30 years and despite disagreements and arguments, which tended to bring out the best m anyone, they had remained friends. He always expressed his opinion and stuck to his guns tot get things done. Residents were indebted to him for his work-, and, on their behalf Mr : Scatter was asked to accept the gifts togethei with the goodwill and good wishes of them all. > Mr W. Fraser endorsed these remarks. Mr Scatter had been -a fair fighter and always, a worker, while being most reliable m attendance. He was selclojn absent from a meeting or > appointment during his long term and he wished to add his tribute to their guest's work and, wish him 16ng life and prosperity. , Mr E. Harrington was very pleased to.be m attendance and see Mr Scatter accept the small tokens of appreciation for work done for the Town. Personally he was hot. aii old member/but next to their 'guest was one of the longest resident citizens. They had had differences of opinions but were always friends and trusted that would be so to the finish.- Mr Harrington hoped Mi Scatter would be spared, to -use . the gifts during many more years m his. career. Mr A. Chisholm said he had not sat with Mr Scatter as a member, but knew he had always been a worker for *the benefit of tti<S Twvn. 'their guest . was, always punctual and a regular attender and he. joined with, the others m wishing him long life "to use his stick, case and pipe. Mr H. L. v Chandler had not had the pleasure of sitting with Mr Scatter as a member of the Board, but knew his record of . long service and reputation. • for strong opinions. It was not given to everyone to spare the time for public duties, but Mr Scatter had given of his ungrudgingly. He had done his best work on the Works Comimittee " and had also filled the: Chairman's position with credit. He added his good wishes for their guesit's future happiness and long life. The Clerk, Mr Jno. Fisher, thought his association with Mr Scatter was longer' than^ any member. Mr Scatter : was elected first m 1896 before he was appointed Clerk, to miss one, or perhaps two, _ terms prior to -acting continually till 1928. He had been associated with Messrs Ewen Matheson, one of the fathers of Otautau, Mr D. Macpherson, who was responsible for the laying of the Main Sewerage system, Mr J. D. Salton, Mr W. Saunders and. many others now-r- decreased. Outside Mr Scatter, .none of the old brigade, were left. Their guest had acted as. his Chairman, he had been a -member of the Works Committee, had been a most faithful attender and most punctual of any who had sat for any lengthy period on the Board. They had quarrelled, but notwithstanding 1 ,., both professionally and socially they were friends, and, on his side at any rate, he held Mr- Seyatter m high respect as a Avorthy citizen. He knew him to be a hardworking citizen, • who had tried" to do the right thing always, and his tenacity and earnestness were to be( respected: , The speaker thought Mr Scatter had done the ! right thing for himself and fajnily m retiring m the face of ad- - vancing years. Residents can never forget his work anct while expressing the hope for his \ good health and trusting the gifts would remind him of his past pleasant associations, thanked the Board members for the opportunity to, speak. : - In, response, Mr Scatter said he had wrought conscientiously foX the good x of all the! ratepayers. The\ presents were unlooked for, but he could only thank them all for the gifts and goodwill expressed. *
