OTAUTAU TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting- held m the Board Room on Thursday, was attended by Messrs \V. J. Wesney {Chairman), A/ Chisholm, H. L. Chandler, W. A. E. H. Fraser and E. Harrington. The Works Committee reported that Mr Perriam had been secured to grade *O«ecn| Street- and the work would be clone shortly. They also recommended that maintenance gravelling- be continued and several more ; streets attended to. The foreman reported the work done' during' the month had principally been \~ maintenance .gravelling- when the weather permitteod. 173 yards had, been carted by the hired teaim and 53, yards by thoe Assistant Surfaceman's team. SO yards were still required to , finish Knutsford . Road. Clitheroe Street maintenance had had to be left over till the drier weather. Report received, further maintenance to be put on Knutsford, Clitheroe, Ellies, Grey, Chester and King- Streets and tho finer gravel to be placed on some o c the footpaths. Tho Chairman reported that an eijeT*i7crt had advised m regard to' the 1 Soldiers' Memorial that the pillars -were best left alone. They were all off the plumb because of settliug. The whole co^ld be cleaned \vitli a wire brush and given a coat of -'cement; wash' by\the; Board's staff.— Agreed?, to. '^ : , ;.. Rates — According to- notice given, , Mr Harrington moved, and Mr Ffaser; seconded, that the rates for the year be General Id., Hospital l/4d.,' Special Id., Sanitary, service : fortnightly,. £1 7/6, weekly £2 10/- less 2/6 per ser-. vice for payment m September and .refuse removal. -10/-, less 1/- for paym September.— Carried. j Gallery Loan — A telegram was received from the Loans Board advised Banction was granted, subject to- the maximum interest being: made 5 3(4 per cent. - ' The Board's Solicitor advised the next step was to advertise (1) the particular purpose for which the loan was required, (2) ' the sum to be borrowed, (3) .. the proposed^ security and provisions for repayment, (4) ns to whether the cost of raising the loan and -first year's interest was to be paid out of the loan, (o) alter the necessary .publication a poll oi the ratepayers. ~pJLr Harrington moved. Mr Chandler seconding,' "that- the Board take the steps as outlined with', the interest at 5 3/4 per cent, for a loan for 20 years with a sinking fund of 3 pdr cent and that the security be a rate of 3/16ths of a penny on the Capital Value and that the cost of raising loan and first year's interest be taken out of the loan."— Carried. . * It was painted out that tho showing of the tate was necessary^ bu£ it was never anticipated to collect it, ?s the extra revenue from the Hall would pro-; Sjtfide the funds. It was further resolved that publicity be made during- September and that the Board meet after the elections on Friday, 26th September, at 7.30 p.m. It was also resolved that the next meeting of . the Board be on Monday; Ist September prior to nominations for the new Board closing- ,■■"".. ; R. Murrell, Manapouri, wnoie advocating support for the opening of a through road direct from Monowai to; the Lakes by Broderick'a track, a distance of 15 miles over easjr grade and with two bridges, as against the pronosed Blackmount-Redcliff-Key Road, 45 miles long. The former would, be more direct, cheaper of construction, and better m every. way if it was hoped tourists . to make the round trip through the Western District. Mr Chisholm said he knew the lay of the, country and considered the suggestion a. good one and worthy of support.' This now puts part of the Lakes County, including Arrowtown and Queenstown, m with Southland; ' The Dog Tax Collector reported a V resident who had a terrier dog, but refused to pay; the tax.— Clerk to write resident, claiming : payment :ur dog would have to be destroyed. The Ranger reported the month's impoundiugs as 11 cows and ~6 horses. It was resolved the Board agree to the same apportionment Heavy Traffic License Fees as-f ixed by the Magistrate last year. The Government Statistician acknowledged receipt of returns. ' Mr John Kirk,.
