... • The first-grade fixture between Otautau and Riverton teataas was played on Saturday on a greasy field. Light rain fell during the whole match, ma&---t ing it rather cold and miserable for the , ppectators. Following were the teams : ' Otautau , — Hope, Greer, Bulman, Roberts,* Harrington, Arthur, Buxton, Clapp,' Eas,'on, L. Clark, : Hardy, j. Smith, Liddell, Cameron and J. Pulley. Riverton — Beer, Foster,, Ryan, McCoy, Sangster, Shychell, Mills, Hopwood, Lockett, Ryan, Foster, Riddell, Dillon, Fleck, Dennis. .', If either team had an advantage Riverton wjis rather better m both baoks and forwards. The / : forwards were heavier, and Jheir backs worked betier together. Riverton won the toss and kicked up field with the wind. Play ranged/ up and down, Otautau having difficulty m keeping Riverton from Crossing the line. Riverton' did eventually get over, but a melee resulted m a force down. A' drop kick from • threequa .ter way Tjy a Riverton ■ man just fell short, followed up by *an Otautau man getting offside m front of goal; The grea.sy ball spoilt a nice attempt, just slewing to the side. Otautau were hard ■ put to it, but good defence and a forward rush carried the game to Riverton territory, and Clapp got a nice chance to pot* a goal from off-side play to Riverton, again a greasy ball played tricks, r At the eoihmence(ment of the second half Otautau backs collected the ball, and a good passing rush' took play, to. Riverton's line, , a force saying Riverton. Riverton got all the ball m the scrum* but were inclined to get off-side, and a mistake of this nature allowed Hardy to pot a nice goal. Otautau 3, Riverton nil. Offside play by Harrington gave Riverton an opportunity to eyen the score, but again the kick failed. Otautau were again put on the defence
i but Buxton cleared to the line. An other attempt by Riverton at kickinj s failed. Play ranged from one end o t the field to the other, and a good op L portunity was spoilt by Eason, whos< ; eagerness put him off-side. Play wai l carried to Otautau's line.. Greei I cleared and following up got his man who collected the ball and centred, Ar : thur gathered, but Buxton fell within 10 feet of the line. The game finished m Riverton territory. Mr V. R.
