ACCIDENT.

— ♦ • Scqlts Gap sawmill was the scene of a distressing accident on Tuesday last when Mr Duncan Macpherson, manager of the Western District sawmills, £td., was struck m the eye by apiece qf steel. Mr Macphcrsou, aged 30, and. whose parents reside at 18 Arthur street, Weliesley, . Invercargill, was supervising the fitting of a new pinion, which was being driveA into place with a hammer. The piece of steel which struck him, either was from the pinion or the hammer, and the damage done to the eye was serious. Mr Macpherson was removed to the Southland Hospital, where an operation -was' performed, an<| the steel removed with an electric \ magnet. The patient is suffering from shock, but is progressing favourably. The mill had just re-opened aft^r the holidays, and the fitting df the pinion was the first job taken m hand.
