Broadcasting Notes.

. ,«, _ Another artist who has recently made his " bow " to Melbourne listeners via 3 LO. Melbourne is Mr Tom Breen> the well known Sydney baritone, who has been engaged by that Studio for a short season. Mr Breen has had considerable concert and broadcasting experience m Sydney, his fine, resonant voice and pure diction making his voice specially suitable for radio work. Mr Breen ' confines himself to the lighter type of ballad, which tlie majority of people find so enjoyable. One of the outstanding events of this week will be the transmitting from Upwey of the concert arranged by Mr Alberto Zelman. Mr Zelman's solo work, and the -high quality of musical "fare" he provides when arranging a concert is too well known to call for any -special comment m these pages ; suffice it to say that an excel leut programme has been at ranged, aud all lovers of really highclass music will be glad to bave the opportunity of listening to Mr Zelman and his fellow artists on this occasion. The many friends of Mr Reginald Bradley, the musical Director and solo violinist of 3 L.O Orchestra, will be delighted to learn that he has at last been prevailed upon to arrange a series of violin recitals. The first of the series commenced ou Sunday, October 17th. , Mr Bradley has gone to some considerable trouble m the arrangement of this series, and is noing lo break new ground-in all directions during his brief season. Whilst his programmes will include well known movements from fche majority of the great concertos, they will also include many little known works for tho vigliu. In conjunction with these sonjewhat unfamiliar works, Mr Bradley will preface _\s placing with a few explanatory words, which will euable '• Listeners " to enjoy them to the full. Having had so many requests for the broadcasting of one act plays 3 L.O. have engaged Mr Eardley Turner, the well known -elocutionist and charactor artist, to' produce a short series of these playlets. Mr Turner'has lately been giving his full attention to the writing ot some original playlets, especially suitablo for broadcasting, and his wide knowledge of stage craft has enable him to bringthese as near perfection as possible. -Those who have enjoyed Mr Eardley Turner's Dickensiau Studies will be anxiously awaiting this new .venture, and, from what we gather, some very instructive and enjoyable evenings are promised. Scotland for Ever !! ! During this week the Brighton District Scottish Society will broadcast one of their well known 'concerts. Mauy well known artists are appearing on the programme, both vocal and instrumental, and needless to say allScottish listeners will have a keen ear cocked for tho "skirl o' the pipes." ' On Friday afternoon, Qctober 22nd, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade js going to "do a stunt " which will be transmitted by 3 L.0., Melbourno. The Brigade Band — a body of very fine instrumentalists — will brighten affairs with some well chosen selections, and although listeners who have never seen one of these displays, " The Fire I Brigade at work and play," will not be able to actually see tbo firemen ''shooting the shoot, " t efcc, the capable

announcer will doubtless supply the •' missing link." Tbe keenest interest is being displayed with regard to ' Mr Henry Santrey aud his Band, who are fulfilling a Bucoess£ul engagement at the Tivoli, and whose act will be transmitted on several occasions by 3 L.O. This combination has been engaged at a salary of £1,000 a week, much more than tl_-at given for any act previously imported into tho Commonwealth. Mr Santrey cljiims to have been the first- man to organise a Jazz Band for the vaudeville stage, and the first to include a harp m the combination of Jazz instruments. We will vow all have an opportui.ity of learning what " real American jazz " is like. During a chit with Madame Elsie Davig, tho Operatic ."-oprano who has made suoh a favourable impression m Melbourne, sho said, " Before I commenced to broadcast for 3 L 0, 1 was not thejeust little bit m favour of my future work. I thought I should fiad it very uniu'eresting, but, to my surprise and delight., I find it just the reverse. I think it is mora inspiring to sing for the radio than before a real audience. Knowing that there must be hundreds sitting intently waiting for your vo.oe to " come through " compels you to siag aud aim^sfc commands your voice to take wings and liy through the air. I just love it, and if all the letters of appreciation i have receive J are true, and 1 think they must be, I have considerablj widened my circle of friends since I have been broads oisting," We would draw the attention of listeners who are interested m the series of talks that are being given at 3 L.O. by Mrs Callaway Mahood on Homecraft and Interior Decoration, that her afternoon has been transferred from Wednesday afternoon to Friday afternoon, so will they just 11 tine m ■' accojdingly.
