An unfortunate and painful accident befel Mr James Thomsqn last week. While busy tallying timber m the yard he had- the misfortune to have his foot crushed under the wheel of tbe motor lorry timber truck, several small bones being broken. An interested onlooker at the relaying of the foundation 'stone of the _j?ublio Library 'in Jn vercargill ' last week was' Mr John Fisher, WI4O as a very small boy witnessed the original cpreipopy on 2fth August, 1874. on which occasion his an*i«ty 'to see the actual work led him to squeezing through tho cordou of rqdcoated volunteers surrounding tho official party, and his prompt ejection again 'to the outskirts. Later Jlr Fisher witnessed tbe raising of " The Goddess of Learning " to its present position m front of the building, and remembers the controversy which took place when the statue arrived. It was asserted the lady was not all she was represented to be, but had been mado of some baser metal than specified, and given a hha{'»| £0?^. p| pplibhs.
