Considerable interest- has been evoked throughout those parts of Southland having bad drainage areas*., over the activities, of the Waimatuku '. River Board. '••■•-.
The dredging operations being carried out by. the Board- are a seurce of .attraction to- residents from widely, scattered districts and small parties of visitors' are periodically arriving atl the scene of operations near tbe out* -, let of the Waimatuku, to see fcbt> - dredge at work. ..The Waimatuku River wj.ll b,e diverted from its age-, long Channel this week* into the .new channel cut by the Boprd, and a three mile bend diverted through a cut of less thau three-quarters of a mule. A report from the engineer at a recent*' meeting greatly gratified members •£ the Board at the progress being mad^ and the economical nature of th© work.. In some parts a channel 45 feet wide and 15 feet deep has been excavated, although the. part being presently operated is about half that measurement. Four hands remove be* tween 200 and 300 yards a day, the average being well over- the 2QU yards.
