Otautau Town Board.

The monthly meeting, held on Mouday, 10th inst., was attended by tho Chairman (Mr Robt, Scatter), and Messrs L. J. Brown, P. Brown, G. Sinclair, J. Parmenter, and W. J. Wesney. Tho Works Committee reported haviug met the members of tho River Board, who liad expressed themselves as agreoable to tree planting being done by the Town Board or the Progressive League on the embankments, but the River Board was not prepared to expend its own funds on tho work. — The report was received, and action delayed till a supply of weeping willows w«ro available. /The Otautau Progressive League sont a deputation, Meßsrs W. Georgo and J. H. Thomas, who laid the aims ard objects of the League before members, and asked for 6ome assistance pending tho League getting its membership oomplete and raising funds. These funds, the deputation .explained, would expended on works of a public and beautifying nature for the good of tho town and district, and therefore would be of a benefit to the Board. —A lengthy, discussion ensued as to tho Board's powers m the matter, aud finally it was resolved to vote the League £10, Messrs Scatter aud Parmenter recording their protest against the vote. Health Department's Report. — The Health Officer submitted a loup report of house-to-house inspection. — lt was decided to "receive the report, and to request the Health Department to serve notice on each owner or householder affected, calling upon them to have the improvements recom•nended carried out, and that the Board's local inspector report upon the work later as to whether the Health Department's instructions have been given effect to. Re-organisation of Band. — J. Lockart, Hon. Secrerary, wrote on behalf of the promoters fox the re-organisation of the Otautau Brass Band asking tor the instruments and submitting names of proposed committee. — Resolved that the Board expresses its pleasure at the movement to start tho Brass Band again and that the instruments be handed over to the Committee on their submitting the name of a ratepayer prepared to act as custodian or guarantor for the safe-keeping of the instruments, members suggesting that the conduotor, Mr J. B. Kirk, would be acceptable to the Board. Clerk's Salary. —The Clerk wrote that his salary had remained stationary for 8 years during whioh time added and increased duties had arisen. — Resolved that salary be increased from £80 to £100 of whioh £15 to be a charge on the Cemetery , Trust account. j Proposed Motor Garage, — The Board's I solicitor, m a lengthy written opinion, advised that tho suggested expenditure on the erection of a building to lease as a ! motor gifage would be illegal. — Resolved j that Mr Thomas be advised accordingly. Nantwich Street. — Geo. E. Fisher asked that ten chain of Nantwich Street bo gravelled as the rood was very bad m j winter. — Required granted, only light gravelling to bo done. Auxiliary Hospital. — Resolved that all material on hand from Hospital be stored on behalf of tho Health Department and that the Clerk arrange to have the goods removed. General. — The surfaceman to be directed to make up entrances to Mr J. R. Corkhill's and Mrs JBaird's residences m *Elles Road, also to poison rabbits on Domain and Recreation Ground, aud to submit list of owners cf property having noxious weeds to bo cut. Ten per cent, on Rates.— lt was decided that all rates remaining unpaid on 27th March have ten per cent, added. Tho Progressive League ,were granted the use of the Board room for meetings at a nominal charge of ls to cover lighting. The Clerk was directed to make application to the Hospital Board for o refund of amount paid out tor wages for Hospital. J. R. Mclvor applied through his solicitor for the sum of £10 for use of his building as a morgue during the Influenza Epidemic. — llewlvod that the amount be paid. Accounts amounting to £129 0s 4d .were passed for payment as were £3 3s for expenses of members attending Electopioation Conference. It was decibed that tho charge for sextons tee for preparing graves ab the Cemetery be increased from £1 to £1 10s for adults and from 15s to £L for infants.
