NIGHTCAPS NOTES.
From Our Own Correspondent
A large section of the community would like to know why only about half of tne Otautau Police Court cases were reported last week m the " Otautau Standard." It is generally believed that more harm than good comes from supressing the kind of case that was supressed last week. This particular kind is usually left to " Johnny Trnth," and it should not be. Mr B. Sprange, our soldier boot- maker, has commenced business m Johnstone's Road, and is sure of strongJbusiuess support from the public. It is left to himsolf to prove his ellicieney and establish a good business. Corporal James Robinson arrived home during the week from the war zone, and other " boys " are expected home this week. Last Friday thu Methodist Church held a sale ct work m the Coronation Hall, which proved a great success. About £50 nett S was realised. On Sunday evening, a service of song took the place of the usual Divine Servioe m the Methodist Church. The weather waa unpropitous and affected tho attendance. The 6acred music, both vocal and instrumental, was well rendered, and interspersed with a reading of quotations from " Biily Sunday," a noted evangalist after thc " Billy Bray "style, among other items. The service altogether was worth attending, and it was a pity the weather conditions had not been better. The Nightoaps Baud has resumed the weekly practices which have not been held since the arrival of the new instruments. The playing of a Band adds a ohnnn to the j township, and the resuming of the looal; band practices will be hailed by all with delight, as public musical performances will be forthcoming as ot yore. The election yesterday to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Town Board caused by the death of the late Mr W. R. .Taggers resulted m an easy win for Mr J. B. Purdue, the voting being: Mr Purdue 79 votes, Mr Hugh Ferguson 29 vote?. v The Town Board has commenced activework m the appointment nf a surfaceman, who began duties yesterday morning to govt up the streets.
