THE GRAND DUKE'S SUCCESSES
It has been hard to follow the development of the Russian campaigns m the Middle East, for two reasons. In the lir^t place, the news we have had of them ha,s been scanty and irregular; and, m the second, the campaigns themselves have not developed steadily, for successes have been followed by long periods — as, for instance, after the taking of Van — during which there has been comparatively little to record. The following table shows at any rate the way events have inarched since the Grand Duke Nicholas took over the command: — January 1, 1915.— Russian* victory at Sarikamish. January 30. — Tabriz reoccupied. February B.— Trebizoud bombarded from the sea. ( May 6. — Van occupied. September 5. — Grand Duke Nicholas assumes Caucasian command. November 2. — Persian disturbances begin ; large Russian force at Kazvin. November 10. — Russian force advances on Teheran. November 12.— Shah of Persia declares himself friendly to tlie Allies. December 9. — Russian success between Teheran and Hamadan. December 10. — Sultan Bulak Pass occupied. December 17. — Hamadan occupied. December 21. — Kuin occupied. December 26. — Kashan occupied. February 18, 1916.— Fa1l of Erzeruni. February 24. — Risen occupied. March 2. — Bitlis occupied. April 14.— Defeat of great Turkish effor fc to break Russian line and retake Erzeruni. April 18.— Fall of Trebizond.
