A HUMAN ROPE
' ENGINEER'S HEROIC EFFORT TO . SAVE COMPANION. An agonising story was related at 3. Hull inquest. Albert Bramwall, third engineer of the steamer Potomac, and Edward Dodd, the steward, were returning to their vessel m Alexandra Dock, when Dodd tripped over a rope and fell into the water. Bramwall let himself down the rope until Dodd was. able to reach his feet and hold, himself up. The strain on' the two men was terrific, and the cold numbed them. For three-quarters of an hour they cried out for help, but were unheard. Then, saying, "I cannot hold any longer, Alf ; good-bye," Dodd released his hold and sank. Just before this they had caught hold of each other's wrists. — The jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned," and warmly cimplimented Bramwall.
