In the second spell Southland had the upper hand, and both van and rearguards give a fine aooount of themselves, their efiorts just failing to lend them winners ou the post. After the mifcoh at Otautau on Wednesday;the Southland team to go on tour will* be selected. The team plays its firsfc match on tour against South Canterbury on 23rd iast. Auckland, Wellington and Taranaki vill be played, the latter game being j a challenge one by Southland for the Ranfurly Shield. A friendly game bat ween j Otautau and Heddon Bush will be*playad on the local recreation ground on Saturday afternoon, The Riverfcoa team is expected to be materially altered for the play-oft. The Seven-a-side TournamenG will be played at Otautau on 26bh inst. Big entries are expected. Several Otautau players joined m with the Calcium Club ou .Saturday m a matoh against the Otahuti team, the latter being strengthened by Winton and Waianiwa players. The Otahuti team included some good backs amongst them N. Cowie, and they oarried out several passing movements m the early stages of the game of a kind which showed that the footballers of the district have a fine conception of this class of play. From one of these Marshall scored a fine try whioh was not converted. The Calcium side then attempted to alter the feature oi the game and did ao with, great success. Close forward work m the scrums and lin&auts was intermingled with drifrbjwg rushes of a disconcerting nature, and such play, coupled Iwith deadly tackling, played havoc amongst the home backs, and before the spell was ended Calcium had ! crossed the line, McKenzie scoring a ! try, which ttobprtspn oonverted. Towards the conclusion of the game Otahuti got going again, and after a good bout of passing were hauld up within 5 yards of the line for a scrum. From this they secured and Cowie cut m and scored a try, which was unconverted. The game ended Calcium 8, Otahuti 6. Mr W. Brown made an efficient referee.
