HOW MR BENTON WAS ACTUALLY KILLED
The commission appointed by General Carranza to investigate the circumstances* of /Mr Benton's murder haA r © mad© their report, which finds that the Scotch rancher was shot m cold blood by Major Rudolfo Fierro, a member of Villa's staff at Sajnalyaca station, on the Mexican Central Railroad, between Juarez ancl Chihuahua, and that there was no court-martial. According to the report, after a quarrel between ill* Benton and General Villa m the latter's office, the General ordered Major Fierro to take the Englishman to Chihuahua Gaol, adding : " I AAdll free him' later if he is civil/ While m the train Major Fierro is alleged to have shot Mr Benton m the side of the head. The body Avas taken out of the train, and propped up against a telegraph pole, and a firing party ordered to riddle it with bullets. Major Fierro then Avired to General Villa stating that he shot Mr Benton when he tried to escape. When the body was exhumed it Avas found that thei* Avas a shot m the head as Avell as eight bullets m the breast. I
