WINTON v. OTAUTAU.

Friendly games between these two clubs are enjoyed at different periods, and another suoh took place on the local ground on Wednesday after the Third Grade fixture had concluded. Winton brought over a mixed team of seniors and juniors, but included such good players as Lindsay (2), Raines, Cowie, Homer, etc. Tho local team had at the last minute to rake up a number of substitutes, and ultimately played through the game with 14 men. Otautau attacked from the kick-off, and the forwards made a vigorous attack on Winton's line. Winton kept their line clear, however, until penalised almost m front of the posts, when Stanway kioked a fine goal. Otautau 3, Winton 0. Shortly after getting to work again, Otautau again m an attacking position, were awarded a second penalty, but Stanway's kick, although a good one, fell short. Winton then rallied and Cowie centred, but Robertson secured and put m an effective run down the line and passed to Wade, who was tackled with the ball. Winton broke fresh ground, but were drives back and Norrie secured and cut m nicely and passed to T !.\jjiian, with his {rearguard backing up well, but the pass was dropped. The spell ended without further score. With the wind m their favour, the visitors attempted to open up tho game, but their efforts were, m tho main, futile, as tlie ball was greasy and the foothold treacherous. Some good play was made by Raine3, Lindsay and Cowie, the latter making numberless dashes, but was well looked after by his opponents. Well through the second spell, Winton broke away with the ball at th9ir feet, and Cowie dashed m pursuit of a hard kick, and kicked hard down field past full-back Renowden, and set off m pursuit. Renowden was outpaced, and despairing of saving a try, he grabbed the fleet Come from the rear as the latter was dashing by. It was an open question whether or no, Cowie would have scored had ho not been interfered with, but to the relief of the local side, a free kick was awarded Winton. This incident proved very amusing to the spectators. Shortly after the game concluded, with Otautau the victors. Mr A. A. Liddell controlled the game.
