High Pressure Water Supply.

Tfae public meeting of ratepayers, beld m the Town Hall on Thursday evening to discuss the above question, was attended by 36 ratepayers. Mr Sal ton, chairman of the Town Board, presided. Tbe chairman explained that the information he was m possession of was such as only to give a crude approximate idea of cost of bringing m a high pressure water supply Last year he had accompanied Mr G. G. Baker to B a tier's creek^nd they had measured tho supply, tyjfcr approximately Mr Baker's estimate was 'iihat there was a supply of 180 gallons per minute '"Available m the stream, which was equivalent to a supply of 60 gallons per head for a day of 10 hours to a population of 400t, and to allow for ample contingencies overflow into eld channel, it could safely be considered a supply for 2000 people, and would deliver water with 1001 b pressure m the Main street. The mains of say 6in spiral pipes, including laying would cost £1100, and for 3in pipes and laying m say Main, Chester, Eton, Harbison and Mary streets, which would supply a large portion of Otautau and North Otautau, would oost another £622, or £1722 without cost of land or dam and reservoir. A £3000 loan to cover cost of everything wowld throw upon the ratepayers, on the present valuation, a rate of about 9 A,.6ths of a penny, and this would provide intereso and sinking fund to redesm ,j|n>loan m 36| years. If iv the scheme they dbuld provide water to sell power or light, of course the rate would be reduced accordingly, and if they could sell enough they might avoid collecting the rate. Property owners also might be expected to effect a saving m insurance rates as a set-oft against any special water rate, Messrs F. B. King, li. Ford, Jaquiery, E. C. Glen and Fisher spoke on the question, after which it was resolved-^" Tnat the Town Board be recommended to obtain an estimate of cost and particulars of scheme from a competent engineer, and submit the result to a later meeting. A vote of thanks to Me Salton terminated the meeting.

At a meeting of the Town BoarJ, held last night, it was decided to. ask Messrs A, and T. dart, Ltd., to report upon the project and submit an estimate of cost. > .
