When a boy Sir Rufus shipped aboard a sailing vessel bound for the Indies, and for more than a year he led tlie rough-and-tumble life of a sea apprentice. When the ship reached Rio -dc Janeiro Isaacs had grown so tired of seafaring life that he ran away, but was caught and brought back, and sis a punishment was made to help m discharging a load of coal.
