Football Remarks.

(B* ENTHUSIABT).

Believe Nightcaps lads are training m anticipation of having a good game against Otautau on 19th inst. Very pleased to hear such good reports. Olifden had a meeting on Saturday evening, but no report has ( ome to hand. Should the few ardent Clifaenites fail to meet with sufficient support, it is their intention to join Orawia, and form a fifteen. It 'is more than likely that we shall see Jules Tapper's name amongst the players. Riverton had their opening day last Wednesday, but it was not remarkable for a large muster putting m an appearance. No news from Orepuki re opening day, and its attendance. , Otautau had what must almost be tf*record for an opening day, when 29 put m an appearanoe last Wednesday m the match, « Shops v. Allcomers," the former winning by 10 points to nil. The game for the first half was very willing, but as could only be ex^ peotea, the second half was less interesting and fast, due, of course, to lack of training. With the addition of at least six rew players, Otautan will have any amount of strength to come and go on. In fact, there is enough material to form two fifteens. Theforwaid pack is stronger this season, whilst the back division promises to be a fast and good combination. I must congratulate Otautau for the splendid way they rolled up. I do not wish to criticise individual play on opening days, but when the pennant matches begin, so will honest criticism. I notice that " A Player " has taken Borne exception to my first report, and I welcome; his letter with gladness, foe he has unintentionally assisted me m drawing the attention of footballers to what at the time appeared to be apathy towards the game. " A Player's " conditional olause, viz., "if the secretary of the Otautau Football Club has not a little patience perhaps it would be as well m the interests of the^olub he represents forthim to resign," cannot be sustained, as it has been ascertained that the secretary has more than a little patience, and therefore cannot serve the interests of the club better than by remaining m office. "Enthusiast's object m writing these notes is to oreate a real live interest m the game, and not to hin . aer its progress as " A flayer " seems; to think.
