THE PEOPLES BURDEN.

to THE EDITOR

Sir,— To read m the daily papers, especially the cablegrams, of what is transpiring m Russia and Turkey, is I heart-rending m the extreme. Living as We do" at the Antipodes, so many thousands of miles from the Boene of so much bloodshed, it is difficult for me to know the reason why such an awful state of things ! exist ;■ there must be something radically wrong. If the people are oppressed, steps should to be taken by those m power to lighten the burden of the people. Considering the age of the world, and the length of | time the human race has been on this planet, as each generation passes away the succeeding^ one should be wise* and more humane. With such a long experience the humane race ought to be m a different state to what it now is. War, with all its dreadful effects, should bj a thing ot ..the past. ' T. 9 the intelligent observer of men and things the. question is :— Is the human race getting better or worse. I reply m the negative. As fat as my judgment tells me, there are tw.o important, factors that are the cause of so much unrest and turnioil m the universe, namely, greed and selfishness. Some have too much, while others can't get enough — too much wealth and too» much poverty everywhere. If the rich were only to launch out and give some of their wealth to their poorer brethren, great good would be done. Ihere are, however, some good rich peoo'e m the world.- In my own mind there is an unequal distribution of money, house property, and land all over the world. I balieve, when God . made the earth, He meant that every one born should have a piece of ground to call his ownj. The earth was made for everyone to get a living, but to some it's a trouble from start to finish. Let the people be ever so opposed, it is not right or feasable to take human life. It i& wicked and wrong to resort to such means, and it's not the way to seek redress or get thingsrectified. Let every government and every individual practice what they preach, and, above all, go by the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would be done by." That is the foundation of religion, and, if followed out, a healthier, happier, and better state of things would exist. — I am, etc.,
