There were 80,000 spectators present. •a In this issue the Wallace Agricultural and Pastoral Association announoes that a quantity of hurdles timber and post 3 will be bisposed of immediately after the etook sale on Friday. An interesting report from our Merrivale correspondent, ha/ been shut out for lack of space. The report recorded the meetings of Mr Little who had conducted a campaign on behalf of no-license m the Waiau district and having successful, gatherings.* It s stated that a Kumeroa (Taranaki) settler, becoming frightened that his patch of potatoes had been attacked by blight, sprayed them with sheep dip, with the result that the tops were all burned off. A disastrous fire broke out m the Woolston Tannery, Christohuroh, on Sunday. The fire is supposed to have started m the vicinity of the boiler. A great stock of leather and hides aud most of the machinery was destroyed. The Returning Officer for Wallace electorate district has had a busy time of it preparing the outfit for eaoh of the polling booths m the electorate, and the restrictions now imposed upon Returning Officers make the task no Bineoure. The Wallace show, notwithstanding the weather, was a pronounced success, and the show may now be looked upon asa permanent fixture* The horses and sheep were a splendid lot, and it would take a lot of quality, to beat them m a~ny show ring m the colony. Clydevale Estate, purchased by the Government from the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, has area of 32,500. The Tapanui Couriersays that acquiring Clydevale will benefit the whole of Clutha electorate and to open up a magnificent settlement. "According to a private letter received m Wanganui last week nine members of the New Zealand football team had been injured.: up to the time the last mail left. Thomson had contracted water on the knee as the result of an injury received m the Bristol match. i The remains of the late Mr Rayenscroft were interred m the Otautau cemetery to day, and were followed by a large concourse of friends. The beautiful Church of England services for the dead were impressively conducted by the Rev. A. D. Beaven, Vicar of the parish. The Western District A. >nd P. Show takes place at Riverton to-day (Tuesday) and, with fine weather, should be a success. The Society was unfortunate m striking the day of the election, and had to fall baok on the day^preoeding it. Tbe qorrect weight of the fat Bheep at the Wallace A. and P. Show was 107 lbs. Mr Robt. Duthie, of Invercargill, was nearest m hi? guess of 107flbs, Mr Chas. Clavk and Mr Jas. Salton 1091bs, and Mr Jas. Ryan 105Ibs. The weight of the fat bullock was 7191b5. Mr Jas. Callender of the N. Z. Loan Co, Invefcargill, was first, his judgment being 7201b5, Mr W. Blatch and E. Matheson, Otautau, being next with a guess of 7251b3. In this issue the Otautau Hack Racing Club notify that their annual races and steeplechases take place 8t Otautau on Tuesday, December 26th. A splendid programme has been prepared, and given fine weather, arecord'attendance may be looked for. Entries close _with the secretary, Mr M. Gouley, on Saturday 16th December, at 10 p.m.
