WAIRIO NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) September, 27.

The boisterous weather of the past week has considerably retarded farming operations, but thanks to the previous spell of fine weather, these are, with a few exceptions, well advanced.

Messrs Gates and McGregor, of Mount Linton, sustained a severe loss last week by the death of their thorough-bred stallion "Benzoin," trom inflammation. Benzoin who was only recently brought from Canterbury, was a fine specimen of the thoroughbred and would have been extensively used by Southland breeders.

A shooting match between the Nightcaps and Dipton members of the Wallace Mounted Rifles was fired at Nightcaps on Saturday last, and was won by the Dipton meu by 16 points, the scores being Dipton 184 and Nightcaps 168 points. Mr Scott, organiser of the Farmers Union has been actively canvassing the district lately, endeavouring to get farmers to take a more active interest m the Union and he informs me that he has been very successful m his mission, so far.

Mr T. Power, of Wrey's Bush, one of the present members for the Wairio Riding and Mr John Forde, of Wairio, an ex -member, have announced themselves as candidates for the coming County Council elections, and I understand that considerable pressure is being brought to bear on Mr J. J. Newton, of Wrey's Bush, the other sitting member, to induce him to consent to be nominated.

Ihe bachelors of Wrey's Bush held a very successful dance m the Wrey's Bush Schoolhouse, on Friday night last. Despite the inclement weather the room was crowded and fully 60 couples must have taken part m the Grand March. Music was supplied by Messrs Egan Bros. (violins( while Messrs Gallahue and McKenzie discharged the arduous dtuies of M'sC m their usual satisfactory style. During the evening songs were contributed by Messrs De Mar and Thomas, and Mr J. Grimwade danced an Irish Jig. Mr D. Hishon, who was injured here some months ago through being crushed between a railway engine and a truck, has again resumed his duties as engine cleaner.
