S.S. Rose Casey.
ASHORE ON RIVERTON BAR.
LIKELY TO BECOME A TOTAL
WRECK
On Wednesday morning a short extra was issued from the Standard office to the effect that the coastal Bteamer, "Rose Casey," a regular trader between Dunedin and Riverton, had been wrecked on the Riverton bar. The steamer left the wharf at Ri vert' -n on Tuesday evening, for Stewart Island, having on board a small quantity of timber, shipped by Messrs Moore and Son, and Mess# Trail Bros, and a draught horse for Mr Mackie, of Stewart Island. When going down the harbour, the engine broke down, and the vessel took the ground on the fringe of the bar, and soon began to leak. An oil launch went out to the assistance of the steamer but was unable to render very much help, and the sea rising shortly after, the crew came ashore, as the waves were making a olean breach over the vessel. During the night the horse on board died, and everything moveable was carried away by the heavy sea that was running. It was hoped at first that the" steamer might be got off, but the weather continuing bad, has almost debarred any such hope being fulfilled now. The vessel is owned by the Southland Steam Ship Co., of which Mr. H. L. Tapley is Manager. A fair amount of the oapital of the company is held by Riverton residents. The insurances are £2,800, and the vessel will probably be abandoned to>the underwriters.
