Speaking m the debate on the | Electoral J3ill, Mr Hanan complained 'strongly that when tbe Boundaries Commissi .iners readjusted the electoral boundaries some four years ago, the Southland district was deprived of the additional member it was clearly entitled to by. reason, of its population, lb was, he said, beyond question that Southland was entitled to another member, and it was a glaring injustice that by the decision of ihe Commission 11,000 people had been denied representation. He contended that the House should have power to review the recommendations of the Commission; and, if necessary, remedy injustices such as had occured m the case of Southland. SOUTHLAND PETITIONS. Mr Hanan presented a petition from Martin Hughes, who prays for consideration m respect of a fine of JB7O imposed for delay m the construction of the Lumsden-Mararoa railway m 1886. Mr Hanan also presented a largely signed petition from women school teachers m the Southland district, asking that clause 23 of the Superannuation Bill be amended to provida that tbe optional age for the retirement of women teachers shall be 50 years.
