It is now a good many 3 ? ears since the district agitated for this building, the -previous' member far Wallace (Mr Gilfedder) taking prominent action to keep the wants of the town and district regularly before the Government,. and, since the election of Mr J. C. Thomson, the latter has been no less indefatigable m his efforts to have the building proceeded With. .< Previous, however, even to the public agitation, the present Postmaster-General . ;had, with. Ttis usual foresight in' postal matters, anticipated these demands,, and earmarked a provisional amburit ofogsQo as, likely to be required with the vel^priierit.Qf ;the ; pJaGe- - That the Department had recognised the growing wants that are likely "to krise diirIhe next few years," anfi anticipated them, is evidenced by the liand?omG and substantial nature of" the building ! they are about to erect, a building which Will be an ornament .to th? to.vn and which will, we predict, satisfy the lesidents, both from an artistic and utilitarian point of view. The building wid stand on' the section adjoining tlie Town Hall, and is set back several feet from the street line. Im mediately at the rear of the public office is the postmaster's room, with access from 'the .public office,- mail-room and main hall of private apartments. The, rest of tho ground floor is taken' up b\' the dininft-n om and kitchen of tiie dwellin '-house, the entrance to which is fro'.n '10 north side into the hall ' mentio-i.-d above. From this hall, a handr-ouie staircase leads to the upper store}', m which is the sitting-room, three bedrooms, bathroom, and sma-ler apartments. The walls of the building are brick, I<l incVies thick, all projection's, doors a;d wi.idows being handsomely and.ina^ively picked out, and the internal fittings will make the whole bu'l.ling replete with conveniences. From th;* centre of the front a flagpole rises' lGft. Ventilation and heating of all the rooms has' been, amply provided for, ;md there are substantial outbuildings both for the public and domestic part of the 'premises. The erection of this harukome building will mark an advancement m the history of the town, and is a matter fcr congratulation to the Town Board, who have persistently and consistently worked tor i s ereciicn, and to the res : d:nts of the district who have developed thz town to what it is.
