SEASIDE MARDI GRAS ORG ANISER APPOINTED A meeting of . the Opunake Seaside Improvement Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday* the president, Mr. A. E. McDonald, presiding. Present : M essrs. L. M. Julian, J. J. Chapman, 1). McCrone, G. Morton, Mesdames Alvis and Pope, and the Secretary, Mr. H. E. Collins. Apologies were received from Messrs. R. H. Hughson, E. W. Dew and D. Julian. The Borough Council wrote advising* that Mr. A. W. Lowe had offered to remove “wet” rubbish (without tins etc) free of charge, and suggested that the society communicate with him to endeavour to effect a satisfactory arrangement for the disposal of rubbish. After a short discussion the suggestion was adopted. Seaside Mardi Gras Mr, P. Rauford, who had been approached to act as organiser for the proposed Mardi Gras at the beach during the Christmas and New Year holidays, waited, on the Council, agreeing to accept the position on a commission basis. A formal resolution, engaging Mr. Ranford as organiser wa s carried, and he was authorised to proceed immediately with arrangements for the Mardi Gras, During the discussion it wa s ag'reed to confine the activities to a Mardi Gras only and to abandon the original plan& for a combined Queen Carnival and Mardi Gras. Members considered, however, that the society shculd.be prepared to accept the co-operation of any local sports clubs or other organisations interested in conducting the Mardi Gras, and it was decided to invite representatives to a general meeting to be held in the Drill Hall on Wednesday, September Bth (Note: this has been altered owing to the Quiz Concert on September 7th).

Three tenders for the Beach pavilion were received. In view of the excellent services rendered by the present lessee, Mr. A. I). Cargo,- during the past difficult 14 months, particularly the services to the travelling public, it was decided to grant him a renewal of the lease for a period of three years at £9O per annum, the amount of the highest tender. ,
