WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING FIRST-AID LECTURE Mrs. R, H. Hughson presided over a very good attendance of members of the Opunake Women’s Institute at the June meeting. The motto: A man can. be master of nothing, until he is master of himself. Mrs. E. Jenkin • displayed , an article of patchwork made by her at the age of 10 years. The guest speaker was Mr. R. B. Croke; of the St. John Ambulance Division. Mr. Croke outlined the history of the organisation from the 11th century to the present day, and also the work done by the local branch since its inception. He also demonstrated splint work, and triangular and roller bandaging. Two piano-accordeon items rendered by Miss June Walker were also greatly appreciated. (Continued foot of next column)

Mrs. T. IN'. Watt's suggestion that members bring the oldest article of handwork in their possession to the next meeting was adopted. The competitions resulted; Cup: Mrs. Hughson 1 Mrs. Sisley 2. Bloom : Mrs. Maindonald 1, Mrs. Hughson 2. Mrs. Hughson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, judges and hostesses and artists before the meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.’*
