monthly meeting dental relief The monthly meeting of the Opimake School Committee was held in the Courthouse, Opunake on Monday evening, Mr. J. S. Hickey presided in the absence of the Chairman, Mr. H. Shields. Present: Mrs. Wright, and Messrs. L. Niccoll, D. Wilkinson, 11. S. Martin, the Leadmaster Mr. F. J- McLaughlin and Mr. D. M. Jillett, Senior Secondary Assistant. An apology was received from Mr, Shields. It was decided that the footpaths outside the woodwork building be relaid and the fence in front of the Manual block be repaired. Steps leading down to the tennis courts were also approved, and the work was left to Mr. McLaughlin with power to ctC/t • Discussing the inadequate playing area especially with a steadily . increasing school roll, members' considered that the Railway Reserve should be levelled without delay and should he sown in grass not later than March. A further motion on these lines, drawing the Board’s attention to the urgency of bringing in at least 3 acres for recreation purposes was earned. The secretary was also instructed to suggest that the local committee be authorised to obtain the services of local contractors to undertake the work. A further motion expressing dissatisfaction with the apparent inaction regarding better lavatory accommodation was also passed, the secretary being requested to ask the Board to take early steps to remedy the position.
It was decided to again bring to the notice of the resident Engineer, Stratford, that attention to the culvert at the corners of Tasman Street and Longfellow Eoad had not been -undertaken in spite of repeated representations.
The Taranaki Education Board advised that an application for a '-rant for the erection of a house for the senior primary assistant would he made to the Department —Received.
A reply from the Principal Dental Officer, Mr. E. Brebner, Department of Health, stated that authority had been given to place Standards 5 and 0 pupils with private practitioners. It was also advised that 50 nurses graduated in August instead of 00 as was formerly the case, and.with such large groups graduating every six months from now on. it was hoped to give early relief to the department’s field officers. Mr. Brebner agreed to meet the chairman and secretary when next in Opu.nake—Received. A grant of T 2-2-0 was made to the South Taranaki Bovs’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club Association.
The secretary was instructed to thank the Opunake Cricket Club for a {location of C l-1 -0 and the use of the grounds was again granted for the present season. The donation was handed to the School Snorts’ Fund. Accounts totalling ,£55-18-1. were passed for payment and Dental Clinic accounts £l-1-8.
