OPUNAKE SURF CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING good attendance A good attendance was recorded at the Annual Meeting of the Opuuake Surf Life Saving Club, held in the Bowling Club rooms on Saturday evening. The president, Mr. N. Reardon occupied the chair. A number of apologies were received. Members observed a moments silence in respect of the memory of the late C. A. Woolford, S. R. Reaver and Mrs. H. W. Barradough. Before presenting the report and Balance Sheet Mr N. Reardon welcomed all members and supporters. He appealed for a greater interest in the club’s activities, especially among younger people. Mr. Reardon also thanked the members who had assisted to make the Taranaki championships such a success and particularly the ladies and executive for their good work during' the year. Mr. Reardon made particular reference to the great interest Mr. G. C. Clouston had always shown in the Club’s activities, and as this would be the last time Mr. Clouston would attend in his official capacity as Mayor of Opunake, the president expressed sincere thanks, on behalf of members, for his splendid help over many years. The balance sheet showed total receipts of £207-6*4. Gate takings at the Taranaki, Championships amounted to £B9-10-10, while receipts from socials and subscriptions totalled £3B*lo-4 and £26-5-0 respectively. Main expenditure was incurred as folios; Taranaki Champs £7l-14*8; N.Z. Champs £l6-19-6; New Equipment £32-0-6. A credit balance of £36-19-4 was shown with a surplus of assets over liabilities of £478-3-1. Mr. W. E. Smith introduced the subject of a War Memorial, but was advised that there was every possibility of a public meeting being called in the near future to discuss this subject. Consideration of the purchase of a surf ski was discussed and it was announced that one was being built locally. It was decided to "await the tests of the local ski. Mr. L, M. Harvey advocated greater encouragement of Surf Life Saving activities in the high school. Members agreed that the suggestion was an excellent one. It was also agreed that the Woolford trophy might be set aside for a school competition. The following subcommittee, Messrs. E. Pickerering*, W. E. Smith and L. M. Harvey, was set up to wait on the Headmaster and staff to discuss the possibility of encouraging greater interest in Surf Life Saving activities in the schools:

N, Watt and S. C. H. Worseldine. First Aid Officer: Mr. R. B. CToke. Hon. Solicitor: Mr. A. D. L. Mac Lean. Gear Steward: Mr. R. Holden. Executive: Messrs. C. Fawcett, P. Hanford, L. M. Harvey, A. Hume, D. De Castro, S. Davies, Delegates: Messrs. E. Pickering, W. E. Smith and N. Johnston. Three new members Messrs. J. B. Dunn, R. A. Jenkins and E. R. Ross were elected. A recommendation, made by Mr. E. Pickering, that the Club offer assistance to the Pihama School during ‘ ‘Learn to Swim” week was adopted. The secretary was instructed to write to the St. John Ambulance Brigade expressing appreciation of their valuable help during the year, especially during the Taranaki championships. Subscriptions were fixed as last year. Adults 5/-, Juniors 2/6. A donation of £2-2-0 to the Beach Improvement Society Fund was approved.
