OPUNAKE BOWLING

OFFICIAL OPENING LARGE ATTENDANCE The official opening of the Opunake Bowling Club's green on Saturday was one of the most successful in years, a large number of bowlers and their wives attending, including members from the Rahotu, Okato, Warea, Auroa and Kaponga clubs. In his opening remarks the President, Mr. A. C. Hickey, extended a special welcome to all visiting and local bowlers, and wished them a very enjoyable game. The President also took the opportunity of congratulating the green warden Mr. J. Macfie and green keeper Mr. B. Mann on the excellent condition of the green. For the first time in the history of the club, Life Membership badges were presented by the President to the following: J. Judson, F, Julian, G. Hammond, P. Dalrymple, A. Fake and C. A. Smith (late manager of Bank of N.S.W.) Club trophies were also presented as follows: Senior Champion, Singles—L. H. Des Forges; Junior Champion, Singles—A. Sinclair; Colts Champion, Singles —P. Ranford; Champion Pairs — T. Tito and H. Shields; Runnersup in Lambie Shield—l. Radich and D. Thomas. Occasion was taken to display the handsome "Jenkin Memorial Shield," presented to the club by Mrs. F. Jenkin for competition between Kaponga, Rahotu and Opunake clubs. Another new acquisition to the club's trophies was a very fine Shield presented by Mr. E. P. Riley for competition among first year players. The President then declared the green open for 1947-48 and called upon Mrs. Hickey to throw the first jack and the oldest member Mr. Judson to play the first bowl. A feature of the day was the record attendance of ladies and Mr. Hickey and members sincerely thanked them for their able assistance and interest in the club. Morton, Hume, Hopkins, Pettit 13; Haskell, O'Brien, A. Sinclair, Gray 19 v. McGaughey, Bevan, Goodin, K. Riley 17; Young, Simpson, Pollock, Baylis 29 v. /Wallis, McLaughlin, Alger, Mischefski 14; Lind, McDavitt, G. King, Hay 24 v. Forrest, Weaver, Dawson; Feaver 16; Sorenson, Macfie, Quinn, Radich 21 v. Hammond, Crawford, Otene, O'Sullivan 14.
