“Waste of Public Money. 5 “I was told in all seriousness by quite a responsible citizen that it was a waste of public money,” said Superintendent P. T. Aitken at the Official opening ceremony of the Opunake Fire Station oh Saturday, when speaking of the hard work and difficulties encountered in constructing the fire engine. It-is certain that few men would support such a Statement today.
“Tap Worms.” Recommending the installation of a. tH'sh-tap drinking fountain at the beach cookhouse, Mr. A. E, McDonald, at Monday’s meeting of the Seaside Society said that he had seen many kiddies using the ordinary taps. Quite often worms had been seen emerging from these taps. “Tap worms, not tape worms,” suggested a member amidst laughter.
Value of Food Parcels. Some indication of the value of food parcels to our British kinsfolk may be gauged from the following letter received by the Waverley ITS.A. from an English ex-serviceman, wild tabulated the articles received and the points required as follows ; One tin jam, 16 points; one tin cheese, loz. per week; one tin tongues, 20 points; 2f pounds soap, six week’s rationsj one tin dried milk, eight points. The writer had 32 points to last for one month.
Tennis Club Meeting, The swing of interest to summer sport is now becoming noticeable and tennis enthusiasts are advised that the annual meeting of the Opunake Chib is to be held on Tuesday, September 9th (see advertisement). Prospects for an increased membership are very bright this year and with the possibility of the two new courts being available by Christmas, members may look forward to a very enjoyable season. There are, however, several important matters to be discussed at the Annual Meeting and all members and intending members should make a point of attending. r Clearing The Air. “The family budget is the sister—one might say the Siamese twin —of the national budget. The latest reminder of this was the stern announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that cigarettes must go up to 3/4 for twenty and tobacco to something near four shillings an mince . . . .
