Rubble Cleared bv Hand. "Only a few of the principal streets in this once large city have been cleared, and the electric trams are again running through them. Other streets—the vast majority—are still blocked with fallen masonry. Gangs of men and women work to clear them, using their hare hands, and throwing bricks, stone and rubble into side streets because they have no mechanical transport to cany it away. During the day you hear occasional explosions as a dangerous wall is blasted, but no attempt is being made to clear the ruins except where they may be dangerous to passers-by." (H. E. Griffiths speaking on "A Visit to Poland" in the BBC's Overseas Service.)
