RUGBY FOOTBALL

MARRIED V. 9INGLE COMPETITION FINISHED Except for the Southern division competition play-off between Eltliam and Hawera, all other games in the senior grade have been cancelled, and the big attraction At the recreation ground on Saturday will be a married v. single game in aid of the Opunake Princess, Miss Velma Hickey. The game promises to he very interesting and with the Fifth grade rep. trial match as a curtain-raiser, a good crowd of supporters *s anticipated. The personnel of the two teams will remain secret until they take the field but it is rumoured that several "dark horses" will be seen in action. Junior fixtures are all to be played on district grounds, and main interest will centre on the Pungarehu-Okato game to be played at Okato. Rugby Draw and Referees The following is the draw and referees for tomorrow's rugby fixtures; Juniors: Rahotu v. Opunake at Rahotu, 1 p.m., Mr. E. McCann. Pihama v. Oaonui at Pihama, 1 p.m., Mr. H. V. White. Okato v. Pungarehu at Okato, 1 p.m., Mr. G. Butler. Auroa a bye. Fifth Grade: Western Division Rep. Trial, at Opunake, 1 p.m., Mr. M. Dudley. JUNIOR REPS. BEATEN 17 POINTS TO 8 The first junior representative game of the season, played at Stratford on Saturday, resulted in a comfortable win for Central, the Coastal fifteen being defeated by 17 points to 8. The game was interesting but inclined to be ragged. Central backs, after they settled down, were the better combination, and demonstrated greater penetration and generally superior handling and passing. Coastal forwards played well and slightly shaded the opposing pack on the day. All played well and it would not be fair to sort out individuals. Among the backs W. Humphries played his ritual good game at full-back, his goal-kicking being sound, while E. Aylwood impressed at five-eights. In the second half Phillips, who went into five-eights also gave a solid display. Centrals points came from tries by Kerr (2), Tippetts and Instone, Kerr kicking a penalty and Cameron converting a try. Brophy scored Coastal's try. W. Humphries converting and kicking a penalty.. The teams were: Central: Bielawski; No well, Instone, Tippetts; Kerr, Breen; Wiggins; O'Donnell; Ancell, White, Phillips, Newland; McKenzie, Needkam, Cameron. Tuiri replaced Breen during the match. Coastal: Humphries; B. Aylward, Thompson, Phillips; E. Aylward, Drought; Brophy; McDavitt; Jenkins, Joyce, Bennett, Corkill; Pope, Segar, Kuriger. Mr. L. Clarke was referee.
