OBITUARY
CHARLES AMBROSE WOOLFORD EARLY PIONEER The death of Mr. Charles Amhrose AVoolford occurred at the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton on July 13th., after a short illness. Mr. AVoolford was a well-known and widely respected early pioneer of the district. ' / Horn in England in 1867, Mr. AVoolford arrived in New Zealand in 1875 on the “Edwin Fox,” which is still in service at Proton today, as a coal-bunker. He lived with his parents at Bulls, and after his marriage to Miss Martha AVilcocks, who journeyed out from England on the same boat, he was employed by the New Zealand Railways at Wanganui for a few years, before settling as a fanner on the Opua Road in 1900. About ten years later Air. AVoolford took over a farm at Taungatara. Retiring in .1920 he came to live at Opunake, but in latter years he spent a good deal of time in travelling. Air, AVoolford was a director of the Awatuna Dairy Co., for a number of years. He was also interested in coursing in the early days. Air. AA r oolford took a general interest in sport and was also a member of the Te Kiri School and Hall Committees. He is survived by five sons, George (Pukekohe), Charles (Fielding), AAblliam (Opunake), Richard (Hawera) and Jack (Kaukapakapa), and two daughters, Airs. AC Graydon (Tokoroa, AATukato) and Airs. L. Harrison (Pukekohe). There are 16 grandchildren.
