SALE OF MEAT

CASE AGAINST BUTCHER ALLEGED FALSIFIED RETURNS Discrepancies between slaughterhouse returns and records of meat received over 12 months—J. Fary's two shops at Opunake and Manaia —occupied the attention of the New Plymouth court on Monday. Mr. W. H. Woodward presided. The fixing of the penalty to be inflicted on John Fary, butcher, recently convicted of making material omissions in returns furnished for the purpose of the Rationing Emergency Regulations, was held over to allow the Defence to produce Fary's income tax returns for inspection. "In order that planned economy in this country should not fall down, penalties must be such that rationing breaches will be unprofitable," Mr. W. H. Woodward S.M. said. He had taken some pains to find what profit there would have been on the sale of meat involved in the charges. His estimation of the profit on 04,000 lb. of meat was £350. Mr. C. H. Crokej, counsel for the defence, asked how this figure was ascertained.

The Magistrate: "I am not prepared to give you that, but I am prepared to give you time to make your own estimate. The case was then adjourned.
