f the local fitness campaign
and it was a fitting finale to a week of many impressive fixtur-
The school marching competition, for which handsome prizes were donated by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. A. J. Brennan, drew ten entrants, but girls’ teams
were. in the majority. In this section, Opunake. attractively garbed in white dresses with a red sash, and carrying a banner worked in similar shades, secured a win. The conditions of the competition required two circuits of the arena, marked off between the two new hedge rows in the camping ground, once in double file, and once with the teams of eight, headed bv a leader, in two lines of four abreast. Marching airs were played bv Mr. •!. Kirk with Mr. P. Harding as sidedrummer.
Of a maximum number of twenty, tlie judges, Messrs. Geo. Short and W. E. Smith, allotted points as. under; Boys’ event: Pihamu A 19fpoints 1, Pihama B 171 pts. 2, Opunake B 16| ids. 3, Oaonui A 14 nts. 4.
Girls’ event: Opunake C 19 points 1, Pihama G 181 pts. 2, Oeo 171 pts. 3, Oaonui B 16* pts. 4, Opunake A 161 pts. 5, Convent 151 pts. 6. Members of the winning teams were: Pihama, Sydney Beanland, Tai Tito, Robert Dix, Brian Conagdeu, William Sheat, Leslie Welsh, Nelson Crofskey, Douglas Crofskey, Owen Baton. Opunake: Glenyss Fre.chtiing, Olive bowman, Given Taylor, Maisie Yolzke, Audrey Pope, Betty Byars, -Jane Otene, Elaine Julian, Noeleen Clare. Opportunity was. taken by Mr. A. L. Herdman at the conclusion of. the event to convey thanks, on behalf of the_ school committee, to all who assisted in making the gala so successful. Mr. ’Brennan also spoke, complimenting’ the teams, upon their performances, and the teachers who had trained them. He expressed the hope that the event would represent the inauguration of an annual series of similar functions. He thanked the public for support given to. the school. Events, by school children were: Folk dancing, infants, Misses M. B. Fugle and I. Richards; folk dancing, Standards 1, 2 and 3 (Misses. M. B. McSherry and M. Hutchinson); physical drill, Standards. 3 to 6 (Mr. H. 0. Donnelly); folk dancing, girls, (Miss W. Downes); physical drill, secondary school boys (Mr. E. R. Penney and Miss Downes). In addition to a gathering of 300 people who paid for admission, nearly 200 sought the vantage points at, the cliff top. Automobile Association officers parked 100 vehicles on the beach. Side-shows and amusements, operated by supporters of the school, plied a good trade, and the school committee’s funds will benefit to some extent. A competition was won by Miss V. Hodgson, ticket No. 130.
