FITNESS WEEK
CAMPAIGN TO OPEN MANY EVENTS PLANNED
Opunake’s programme- for the physical fitness week commences tomoiTow (Saturday), and for almost every one of the seven days which follow there is an event which is closely linked with the campaign. The schedule of events was drawn up at a conference of sports clubs representatives, and provision is made for every form of sportactivity pursued in the town. Tomorrow the events will he a tennis competition between borough and county representatives, and a full-day bowling tournament, for which entries have been received from all parts of the province. A cricket match between town and country was suggeted but this, can not be arranged. The spiritual side of the campaign will not be neglected, and although, at short notice,, it was not possible to arrange for the
features and for the form of sendee which were, suggested, Sunday will have special significance. References to the occasion will be made at the St.
Barnabas’ Anglican Church, where the Vicar, Rev. -I. Harold Batson will speak of physical fitness and human understand-
ing. A physical fitness service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday evenin'*', when appropriate items wil be rendered by the choir, under the leaders!)in of Mr. W.
B. Richards. Services at the Methodist Church also will be related to the fitness campaign. Churchgoers in the evening will h ive the opportunity of attending a sacred concert by the Opunake Federal Band and supporting artists in the New Theatre at the conclusion of the services. There will be a silver coin collection and funds will go to the phyical welfare committee. Through the transfer of the intended school fete to. a beach
gala later in the week, Monday has been left vacant, and there is no special 1 attraction for Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, the programme will be: Wednesday : Open sports meeting at the Bomain under the control of the Athletic Club. Thursday: Swimming sports at the lake, organised Surf ciub. 'mr > Friday: Egmont <;mmty schools sports at the Bomain. Saturday; Grand finale with Opunake school’s beach gala.
