Cricket Match Postponed.-^ Similar circumstances were faced by the Stratford Technical High School' and Opunake cricket clubs on Saturday when endeavours were made to make up teams for the scheduled senior B fixture. By mutual consent, the match was postponed, neither team having a prominent chance of success in the competition.
Swimming at Lake. — Business people and loeal residents were canvassed yesterday for subscriptions to a prize fund promoted by the Opunake. Surf Life-Saving Club in connection with a swimming carnival, it proposes to hold at the lake during the forthcoming national fitness week. Funds raised from this source will he applied to the purchase of prizes for children’s, events.
Carden Party Tomorrow. — Funds of the Opunake branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union will benefit from the garden party which is to be held in Mrs. D. Mourie’s garden tomorrow (Wednesday). There will be many competitions tq attract patrons and stalls will offer for sale a variety of goods and produce. Mrs. Mo Uriel’s wellknown gardens are looking at their best for the event, which promises to be one of the most attractive this, season.
Club-house Sprlngcleaned.— Although somewhat late in the season, spring-cleaning onerations were in full swing l at the Opunake, Surf Life-Saving Club’s pavilion at the week-end. Members comprised an energetic working bee which undertook the painting of the roof, the concreting of flu; store-room floor and the cleaning and re-painting of the window frames-. The .club house now presents a clean and neat appearance in readiness for the Taranaki surf ehampionshpts to be held on Sunday next. Commission Secured. —
Advice has been received in Opunake Unit Mr. Bob Cambpell lias received his commission with the Royal Air Force, with the rank of pilot-officer. He is at present stationed at the training flying- school at Abu Suear, a desert station in Egypt, and there he will undergo advanced training. Opunake residents are following with interest the career of Pilot-Officer Campbell, who has made rapid advances in the air force, and will watch, for further progress on the part of this popular young officer.
New Coastal Justices. — Included in the latest list of appointments of justices of the neace, which appeared in a recent issue of the Gazette, arc the names of several residents of the coastal district. The new appointees. are Messrs. L. H. Andrews, R. Cassie (Okato), C. W. Clemance, (Upper Kahui), G. Feaver and J. S. Hickey (Opunake). As this district has not in the past been plentifully supplied with laymen administrators qf justice. the appointment of these well-known residents, to the bench will supply a long-felt want.
