OBITUARY
/ Ml-. JOSEPH GEARY LINK WITH OLD DAYS There will be sincere regret throughout the district at the death of Mr, Joseph Geary, who passed away at his residence in Main Street on Sunday. Although he had suffered for a considerable time from illness, his death was unexpected by his family and by close friends. Dorn at Wellington TO years ago, Mr. Geary was a resident of Opuuake for fifty years, and was closely identified with many activities in the town. He was the second son of Private Joseph. Geary, of the Wellington Rifles, and his father, who served in the Maori Wars, was a member of the force led by Major Von Tempsky when that gallant fighter and his whole detachment were ambushed and massacred in the battle of Te-Ngutu-o-te-Manu.
During- Ills residence In Upunake, Mr. Geary was in business here for many years, the term of bis residence being- interrupted for three years in which period he was in the Rotorua district. In recent years, he has been living- in retirement.
Although Mr. Geary was not associated with public affairs, he was an enthusiastic member of the Ancient Arden of Foresters, of which order he had been a member since he was fifteen years, of age. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him, and his family was equally well known.
Surviving him are his widow, five daughters, Mrs. H. Frost (King Country), Mrs. T. Itobinson (Hawera), Mrs. W. Harris (Wanganui), Miss G. Geary (Opunake), Miss E. Geary (Piriaka), and two sons, Messrs. P. Geary (Auckland) and J. Geary (Opunake). Mr. 0. Geary (No w Plymouth) is a brother.
The interment took place to,nv.
