THE NEW TOWN HALL

(To the Editor) Sir, —Can you inform me when the Borough Council intend placing the proposal of the erection of the new Town Hall before the ratepayers and whether they intend making any alterations to the plan which was on view in the window of the Opunake Times. As one who inspected the drawing closely, I would like to make the suggestion that care be exercised in the measurements of the kitchen, which on the plan is little bigger than a moderate-sized bedroom. In the old building, I have seen the good ladies, who are ever ready to assist at public functions, struggling to carry out their task because the place was too congested. To my mind, this is a very important part of the building and will be used on many occasions. As the women of the district will be the ones to please in this particular direction, I .would like to suggest that the best be put into it even if something else has to wait in the meantime.

My reason for asking when the vote on the question is to be taken is because of the time taken to get going. It seems a long while since the fire destroyed our hall and if there is one thing that is needed in a growing community it is a public hall. Although there are people in Opunake who do not think a Town Hall is necessary, it seems strange that the residents of every town, from North Cape to the Bluff, think otherwise. Even in the smallest country places, a public hall is one of the first considerations. It is to he hoped the Council will step out file proposal soon, otherwise we will be hooking up for next year’s functions in the halls outside the town area.—l am, etc., GET BUSY. Note. —As a result of enquiries we are informed that the plan shown was a preliminary drawing and in the final plan now being prepared, two or three alterations have been made, one of which provides for a much larger kitchen than originally shown. The revised plan and specifications will be received from the architect within the next few days when the matter will again be fully discussed by the Council. If the revised plan is adopted, application will be made to the Local Bodies’ Loans Board for sanction to raise the required amount. After these steps have been completed. the Council will then be in a position to place a definite loan proposal before the ratepayers. We can assure residents that fhc Council is endeavouring to finalise the .question as soon as possible—Editor, Opunake Times. 1
