THE CRICKET SEASON

FIRST PRACTICE MATCH" OPUNAKE v. IfINAIA To allow members the opportunity of getting into form for the coming season,' the above matcn was arranged and took place at Manaia on Saturday. The local team was much below’ full strength while Manaia fielded the side which will probably do batt.e for them during the season. Included in the ranks was RegEden, who was in great form, knocking up half the total of his side.

The weather was bright and the match, though rather onesided, was thoroughly enjoyed by all and will do a great deal to help the teams in their future games. Opunake batted first, opening with Watt and McTsevish who knocked up 25 runs before being separated. Clegg and Walker w'ere the only others to stand up to the bowling of Eden wdiich was particularly good. The total score was 42. *

Apart from Eden and Hobday, both of whom batted confidently', the Manaia team fell cheaply to the bowling of Clegg, Watt and Wells. The total score was 121. Both sides fielded smartly, very few runs being scored through mistakes in this direction. When it is taken into consideration that Manaia is an A grade team, the performance of-the local eleven was quite good and the inclusion of the leading batsmen will see a well balanced combination take the ,field when the fixtures for. this season commence.
