BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP

THE SINGLES TITLE B. SMITH’S SUCCESS. During the. week-end the two finalists in the Opunake Club's .senior championship singles, Ic. Smith and J. Morris, held their match under ideal weather conditions and on a perfect green. The game was of 2i points and up to the twentieth head, when the issue was still open, the large crowd oi members present were treated to a hue close game of bowls.

Jsot h finalists played a nice game and seldom more than one point was gained from the head until near the finish of the game when each brought off the possible four in succession.

With the, score 15—13 in his favour, Smith gained a four on the 21st head which placed him in a strong position, but Morris r eplied with the same number, making the game 17—19. AVith a 2 on (he next head, Smith secured the required amount and with it, the honour of singles champion of the club for the 1933-34 season.

AV e join member’s rn congratulating the winner on his success which is quite au outstanding event in howling when it is remembered that this is only Ids third year at the game. During (lie whole competition lie was defeated once only, on this occasion by <T. Morris whom lie met in the final. Congratulations are also offered to the runper-up who played good bowls all through. A brief description of the match is as follows:

Gn the Ist head both were well over with first two bowls. Morns drew the shot with his third. Smith drew a,toucher with In's last howl, Morris being short. Smith I up.

Morris scored one on each of the next three heads but Smith then took a hand and with a 2, 3, and two singles, led by B—38 —3 at the Bth head.

On the 9th, Smith drew the shot with his second and knocked up a short bowl with his third arid lay 3 up. Morris trailed kitty with his last to lie 1 up. The next six heads were won'ln a row by Morris who was drawing well, while Smith was missing shots with a yard on dry the narnowest ot margins. On the loth head (lie score was 12—8 in Morris’ favour.

Four heads in a row to Smith pni him in front bv 3 points and with the score at 13—15 on the next head made tilings very interesting. The 21st head however, saw a great change come over the

match, Morris was short with his first apd Smith drew a foot from kitty wfth: his two first bowls. Morris drove with his' third and took out his own bowl which was. lying a close third. Smith drew another and Morris again missed with his drive, leaving Smith eight, feet to draw his fourth, making the game 19—13 in his favour.

Not to be denied Morris returned the compliment on the next head. Smith being over with his two first howls and short with 3 and 4. Morris drew well and the game at this stage was, Smith 19 Morris 17.

The final bead , found Morris holding two shots, one on the Kilty when Smith played his final bowl which was a splendid shot, taking the shot howl out and trailing kitty a yard for 2 up and the march 21—17.

VISIT FROM PARK CLUB WEEK-END MATCH Six -rinks from the Park (Hawera) club will visit Upunake I this week-end and will play friendly games with members of the local club both morning and afternoon. Hawera match postponed in (lie tirst round next Wednesday afternoon (January 31) at the Hawera green. If Hawera wins, Hawera, Park and Opiumke will be level, otherwise Park will win outright. PROGRESSIVE PAIRS WEEK-END COMPETITION Good weather conditions and an attendance of 24 members of the club gave the club an excellent opportunity of staging a progressive pairs competition during the week-end. All 'games were closely contested and after hve matches were concluded, M. Wilson with 4} wins and 4 loss was the winner of the skips section. C. Glare and 11. Marcroft with 4 wins and 1 loss] tied for the leads and in a play off, the latter won narrowly.
